If you're after a simple, polished music game so you can jam out on your phone, Tiles Hop might be up your alley. Enjoy your favorite tunes in a totally new way!
Description
For years, music games have been all about timing, Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Stepmania, and others have defined the field with their timing-based gameplay. In these games (and games like them), a series of icons move slowly down the screen. Tapping the right input in time with the beat will give you lots of points, while tapping the wrong input or tapping out of rhythm will lose you points.
Many mobile games have followed this same trend. Games like Piano Tiles ask you to tap the bottom of the screen in time with the notes that appear. These games are simple, fun, and predictable.
Tiles Hop – EDM Rush is not like these games. It's a totally different beast that puts its own unique spin on both the music game and mobile games in general. In Tiles Hop, you control a glowing orb that hops along a singular path of glowing tiles. As the player, your job is to control the orb in its journey from one end of the song to the other. You do this by dragging your finger across the bottom of the screen.
The big difference here is that Tiles Hop isn't about timing. Instead, it's just about relaxing and enjoying your favorite tunes while you wiggle your finger back and forth. As long as you're somewhat close to the location of the next tile, the ball will hop and jive along the path and bounce to the correct destination. You don't need to time your inputs at all. You just need to put your finger in the right place.
In some ways, this means that Tiles Hop resembles a platformer or endless runner more than a music game. Just like you swipe to one side to avoid obstacles in an endless runner, you swipe to one side to choose the correct path in Tiles Hop. Unlike endless runners or platformers, however, Tiles Hop is a fairly relaxed, easygoing game. You might not get a high score every time you play, but you're not going to be massively punished for a trivial timing error, either.
Tiles Hop uses a sort of nu-wave aesthetic. It's very digital art, with bright, glowing images and levels that are infused with a shifting single color. The game looks very good and is quite polished, with snazzy menus and a solid aesthetic that makes it feel welcoming. It's a perfect game for relaxing in bed.
In a lot of ways, Tiles Hop is an ideal game for music lovers who want to relax while they game. Unfortunately, the monetization used by the game interferes with this concept. Tiles Hop has some of the longest, most intrusive in-game ads of any mobile game out there. Playing through a two or three minute song will often reward you with an unskippable, thirty-second video ad. This is not great, especially given how short many of the game's tracks are.
Like many other mobile game,s Tiles Hop has a “VIP” in-game purchase that will turn off ads and unlock a number of additional tracks. Unlike other games, this VIP purchase is expensive enough that its a questionable purchase. Tiles Hop is a fun game, sure, but the steep cost of VIP seems unreasonable given how many great alternatives there are in the music gaming genre. Even if these other games involve more tapping and less sliding, you can always play them on “easy.”
Overall, if you're after a game to play while you're relaxing or you just want to vibe with some killer EDM tunes, Tiles Hop - EDM Rush might be the game for you. It's a fairly small download, so it's definitely worth checking out if you're in the mood to enjoy some music. Be wary of the intrusive ads, however, and be prepared to shell out a fair bit of money to unlock the VIP mode if you'd like to enjoy the full game.

How To Play

Mobile ads can be super intrusive, but they're usually not stored on your device. If you're getting particularly annoyed with Tiles Hop – EDM Rush's barrage of involuntary consumerism, try putting your phone on airplane mode and ask the game where it's getting its ads from. While some mobile games have countermeasures that prevent this trick from working, the version of Tiles Hop we tried was defeated by this simple trick.
In order to succeed at Tiles Hop, all you need to do is hold your finger down and move it under the tiles that approach the bottom of the screen. There's no tapping involved at all. While you do have to slide your finger back and forth, you don't need to make big swipes or even lift your finger at all. Instead, just chill out and enjoy the music while you make the smallest motion possible. This last part is important. When you're starting out, it's easy to overestimate the amount of movement that Tiles Hop expects from you. Keep your motions small and reserved while you get a hang of things.
When you first launch Tiles Hop, you'll have a small number of tracks unlocked. If you want to play more songs, you'll need to do one of two things. First, play through the game! Tiles Hop isn't trivial, but it's easy enough that you should be able to pass most songs within a few tries. This means you'll quickly be able to progress through the game's tracklist and unlock all of the free tunes.
As you get into Tiles Hop – EDM Rush, you'll periodically be presented with the option to buy VIP mode. VIP mode isn't really an optional addon here. Instead, it's the full game. VIP mode turns off ads, comes with lots of extra tracks, and gives you better functionality. If you're enjoying Tiles Hop – EDM Rush and you think you'll keep playing it, this can be a great purchase that will give you more tracks while removing the game's biggest downside. With no ads, you'll have even more fun relaxing and hopping through your favorite songs.
